(February 17, 2009) — ChBE Assistant Professor Hang Lu has been selected to receive a 2009 Sloan Research Fellowship. The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation announced their selection this morning, and noted that recipients are conducting research at the frontiers of physics, chemistry, computational and evolutionary molecular biology, computer science, economics, mathematics, and neuroscience.

(January 30, 2009) — The Georgia Cancer Coalition has announced the recipients of the 2009 Cancer Research Awards, made possible by Georgians who contribute to the Georgia Cancer Research Fund on their state income tax returns. Michelle Dawson, Ph.D., assistant professor at the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, is one of the eight recipients. She will receive $50,000 for her research into the development of specialized cells designed as gene delivery vehicles to target and treat breast cancer.

(July 16, 2008) — Dr. Sue Ann Bidstrup Allen recently received two awards. She was selected by the Council for Chemical Research to receive the 2007-08 Diversity Award. The award is given to an individual whose leadership has had a positive impact on advancement of minorities, women, and underrepresented groups within chemistry-based sciences and engineering through recruitment, retention, mentoring and increased access to research careers. Dr. Bidstrup Allen also received the 2008 Sharon Keillor Award. The award is given by the American Society of Engineering Education to recognize and honor outstanding women engineering educators.

(July 16, 2008) — Dr. Jeffery Hsieh and his team of researchers have successfully developed a novel separation technology and built a pilot-scale separation facility to recover calcium carbonate from eggshells for commercial use. Funded by Georgia’s Traditional Industries Program for Food Processing, the project focused on developing a process that extracts value-added byproducts from eggshell waste. More than 37 million pounds of eggshells find their way to landfills each year in Georgia.

Precisely what is on every Georgian’s mind right now: the continuing drought and what to do about the state’s water resources. Dr. Koros’ research involves the complicated science of membrane-based gas separation and selected liquid separation topics. As an expert on using high-tech membranes to filter impurities from water, Dr. Koros commented on the feasibility of Georgia employing desalination of ocean water to help solve its water-shortage crisis.

Last fall, the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC’s) Division of Corporate Finance appointed him as an academic engineering fellow. Richard Sutton, the senior adviser for academic affairs and director of international programs, told the state Board of Regents on Wednesday that students who go overseas perform better academically after they get back and have higher graduation rates.
