(May 6, 2008) — ChBE graduate student Anne Ruffing received an award from P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) International recognizing her outstanding academic and research achievements, as well as her extensive outreach activities. Anne is completing her fourth year in the School of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering's Ph.D. program under the direction of Dr. Rachel Chen. Anne is the only student in the state of Georgia to receive the P.E.O. Scholar Award this year.

(April 4, 2008) — A 14-year veteran of the Georgia Institute of Technology, Dr. Gary Schuster, who currently serves as Tech’s provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs, has been named the institution’s interim president, effective July 1, 2008.

(March 31, 2008) — During spring break 2008, 24 undergraduate and graduate students visited pharmaceutical manufacturing plants in Puerto Rico as part of a course offered by the Georgia Tech Center for Drug Design, Development and Delivery. Students heard lectures and toured the facilities of Amgen, Johnson & Johnson, Merck, Pfizer, and Wyeth. They learned about and saw the production of drugs, including diabetes medications (Januvia), birth control patches (EVRA), slow-release cardiovascular pills (Procardia XL), biotechnology proteins (Neupogen) and veterinary medicine (Heartgard).
This trip was the second in what promises to be an annual event. Participating students were from the Schools of Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, and Chemistry & Biochemistry. The trip was led by professors Mark Prausnitz and Andreas Bommarius, organized by graduate students Charlene Rincon and Eduardo Vazquez, and sponsored by the Center for Drug Design, Development and Delivery.

(February 4, 2008) — In what is believed to be the first peer-reviewed human study of its kind, researchers have demonstrated that patches coated on one side with microscopic needles can facilitate transdermal delivery of clinically-relevant doses of a drug that normally cannot pass through the skin.

(August 10, 2006) — More students at Georgia's public colleges and universities are studying abroad than ever before, and officials at the university system say they're picking up more than a love of fine wine and funny accents.
Richard Sutton, the senior adviser for academic affairs and director of international programs, told the state Board of Regents on Wednesday that students who go overseas perform better academically after they get back and have higher graduation rates.

The goal is to have a new person in place before Chameau leaves for CalTech this September.
"You never want to have a gap," said Bill Koros, a professor in the school of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Roberto C. Goizueta chair that is heading the search committee.

(July 6, 2006) — Professor Pradeep Agrawal has been appointed to the position of associate chair, with responsibilities that include the undergraduate program in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering. The appointment will be effective September 1, 2006. Professor Agrawal will assume the position held by Professor F. Joseph Schork, who is leaving Georgia Tech to serve as the Chair of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Maryland.

Fortunately, that situation is one that Tech’s ChBE students and other researchers never have to experience because the School has its own Machine Shop.
