- SURF & IREP 2008
SURF & IREP 2008 (Research Experience for Undergraduate) Programs in Materials Science and Engineering at Georgia Tech are pleased to announce the SUMMER UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP
(SURF) and International Research Experience (IREP) Programs at Georgia
Institute of Technology, in Atlanta, Georgia, from May 28 to July 23,
2008. SURF is sponsored by the National Science Foundation under the
Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program, and in part by
the Georgia Institute of Technology.
SURF2008 is an 8-week research experience program open for
undergraduates in any science or engineering discipline at U.S.
Universities, for hands-on participation in materials research with
projects focusing on "Structure-Property Correlation across
Micro-to-Nano Length Scales." Students will work on a one-to-one basis
under the mentorship of faculty in various engineering disciplines at
the Georgia Tech. IREP 2008 is for SURF students to participate in
research at an international site in Brazil. Students will travel to
the University of Campinas, in São Paulo, Brazil, for a period of six
weeks from around June 4 to July 16. They will work on projects with a
faculty mentor along with his or her research group at the university.
SURF and IREP students will receive a $4,000 stipend. The SURF
participants will also receive a $1,456 housing allowance. Costs for
lodging while in Atlanta and at the international site, as well as
international transportation for IREP participants, will also be
provided.
The deadline for submitting applications is March 14, 2008. Information

- NSF Scholarships for future high school teachers
NSF in collaboration with Kennesaw State is offering $20,000
scholarships over two years to students who are interested in becoming
high school chemistry or physics teachers. A flyer is attached with
more details. Applicants should be finishing their degrees in Spring
2009. They are eligible for a scholarship their senior year at GT, and
while they earn a masters in teaching the following year at KSU.
The deadline is April 1st, but students will be accepted on a rolling
basis.

The Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Institute at The University of Iowa (NNI@UI) is pleased to announce a summer research experience for undergraduates (REU) program in nanoscience and nanotechnology funded by the National Science Foundation. We anticipate funding for 8 students to work with faculty mentors from the departments of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Pharmacy, and Occupational and Environmental Health at The University of Iowa.
