1. Development of Tailored Heat Transfer Fluids for Electronic Applications
Liquid cooling is becoming attractive for a variety of multi-scale electronic applications, because it can achieve much higher heat transfer coefficients than air-cooling. However, there are many requirements for liquid coolant, which include high thermal conductivity and specific heat, low viscosity, low freezing temperature and high boiling point, etc.
Quantum chemical and semi-empirical estimation methods are proposed to design coolants. It is likely that no single liquid will satisfy all desired criteria for all applications. However, it may be possible to identify a set of liquids (or liquid mixtures) for specific power dissipation levels and/or different length scales of application. These methods will be used to guide a program of experiments that will yield thermo-physical properties and heat transfer coefficients of the “tailored” liquids identified.
