“Cryo-EM in the Southeast, and the future of structural biology"

Abstract:

Cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years. Despite this growth, challenges remain for many researchers including lack of access to instrumentation and intractable problems with preparing samples. The Southeastern Center for Microscopy of MacroMolecular Machines (SECM4), at Florida State University is an NIH supported service center that seeks to overcome these problems by offering free access to cryo-EM sample preparation, imaging, and training for users in the greater Southeast. I will describe the available services at the SECM4 and how interested users can apply for access to the center. Finally, I will describe research in the Stagg lab aimed at enabling structure determination of challenging samples.
