Yonathan Thio has taken over the role of Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies for Georgia Tech School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (ChBE).

Thio, a Principal Lecturer in ChBE, succeeds Professor Victor Breedveld, who had served in the role since 2017.

Thio, who joined Georgia Tech in 2005, has been on the ChBE faculty since 2012.

He teaches and develops instructional materials for core undergraduate ChBE courses and has taught all but two courses in the undergraduate curriculum.

He has received several teaching awards at Georgia Tech, most recently the Faculty Teaching Award from Women in Engineering and the College of Engineering Outstanding Teacher Award (Midcareer or Senior), both in 2024. He also has been a repeat winner of ChBE’s AIChE Outstanding Faculty Award through the years.

Thio serves on ChBE’s Undergraduate Curriculum committee and has advocated for — and then helped implement — updates that include numerical methods in core courses.

He received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering and Materials Science & Engineering from University of California at Berkeley and his Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
